World Cup Betting History

So it is that time again when the World Cup gets underway this time in Brazil and naturally punters turn to the World Cup betting history to determine who the next winner will be.

Today, thanks to an explosion of the online betting markets including World Cup betting, you can easily place in-play bets and before the kickoff of any games, so you never have to worry about missing out on any World Cup betting opportunities when there is value to be had.

For the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, despite there being 32 World Cup teams playing once the tournament gets to the serious stages there is typically always a select group of countries that stand a good chance of going on to win it.

Not surprisingly, hosts Brazil are the most successful nation in the history of World Cup betting. They have qualified for every FIFA World Cup, and in all of the world cup games they’ve played, have gone on to amass the best winning record, recording 64 victories, 14 draws, and 14 losses. In total, they have won the prestigious football tournament a record five times.

Besides Brazil, there are only a few other countries with as much World Cup history. Italy closely trail the 2014 world cup host country having won the World Cup four times. Germany who are another one of the teams to typically feature at the tail end of the tournament have won it three times, and Argentina and Uruguay have both won it twice before.

South American teams have dominated the Western hemisphere in the World Cup having amassed the majority of World Cup trophies. They have also enjoyed a great home ground advantage, with a South American team winning every time it has been hosted in a South American host nation.

Here are some of the previous World Cup winners:

2010 – Spain were 4/1 to win
2006 – Italy were 10/1 to win
2002 – Brazil were 7/1 to win
1998 – France were 7/1 to win
1994 – Brazil were 10/3 to win

As you can see from the history of the betting odds in the last five World Cups there have been no real long shots that have won over the past two decades.
