The new English season of football officially kicks off on Sunday with the Community Shield. Premier League champions Chelsea will be taking on FA Cup winners Arsenal for the first piece of silverware on offer for the season from Wembley.
Arsenal may just have the value on their side to take down the Blues at a quote of 7/4 with Betfair. History may be on their side as well because only 30% of Premier League winners have gone on to win the Community Shield as league champions.
That reads as only seven Premier League winners having won the Community Shield from the 23 editions of the trophy which have been played. That’s not a very high percentage at all. Chelsea march into the Wembley clash at a price of 7/5 so that indicates how tight this is going to be.
But what is interesting is the knock on effect of the last four winners of the Community Shield having gone on to finish empty handed in the following Premier League title race. Chelsea hold 13/8 favouritism at Coral to win the 2015/16 Premier League with Arsenal at 9/2 and Man City sandwiched between them at 3/1.
