With the English top flight clubs who are involved in Europe this season entering the Capital One Cup third round, the draw has thrown up a big North London derby clash of Tottenham v Arsenal, the big pick of the matches.
Whether or not Arsene Wenger or Mauricio Pochettino will be particularly bothered by the tie or not will be seen in the line ups on September 22nd.
The last four occasions that there has been a big clash of top Premier League clubs in the third round of the League Cup, the winner of that clash has gone on a good cup run. Manchester United went to the semi finals in 2013/14 after starting with a third round win over Liverpool.
Arsenal beat Spurs in the 2010/11 third round and went on to reach the semi finals. Liverpool beat Chelsea in the 2000/01 third round and reached the final that year.
Arsenal went to the quarter finals after they had beaten Manchester United 4-0 in the third round of the 2001/02 league cup. While it was only a quarter final place, the Gunners went on to break United’s dominance by winning the Premier League that season.
So a bit of a nice trend there and worth a flutter on whoever comes out on top in the clash to go deep into the tournament.
Tottenham are 16/1 to land the silverware, with Arsenal on the drift a bit to 8/1 just in shy of Liverpool’s 9/1 quote. Chelsea (who visit Walsall) and Man City (who go to Sunderland) are joint 5/1 favourites.
