What hasn’t Phil “The Power” Taylor done through his long and successful career? He is one of the greatest sportsmen that the country has ever produced and he will be back at his spiritual home of Blackpool to have a crack at winning the World Matchplay darts title for the eighth time in a row in July.
It’s a phenomenal record, having won fifteen of the sixteen previous editions of the tournament since it’s initial hosting at the Blackpool Winter Gardens. James Wade was the only one to beat him to the punch, taking the title in 2007.
Wade has been to the final in four of the last eight editions so is probably worth watching again. Last year Taylor pummelled Michael van Gerwen 18-9 for the title, but this time around Skybet have MVG as 15/8 favourite ahead of Taylor at 11/4.
Van Gerwen has already won The Masters and the UK Open this year and with some wobbles from The Power in 2015, the Dutchman looks justifiable favourite. Given his history though, Taylor is value at 11/8 to reach the final. The only other player in the field in single figures for World Matchplay 2015 betting is Gary Anderson at 6/1 with Skybet.
