Manchester United threw down a huge gamble it would seem, by splashing out some big cash for an unproven striking youngster.
The Red Devils snapped up teenager Anthony Martial from Monaco on transfer deadline day, and the French outfit may just have gotten swindled with one of the add-on clauses where United would have to shell out €5m for each time that Martial wins the Premier League Golden Boot.
United in total will pay €50m (£36m) over the course of the next four years for the player. That’s a lot of goals he is going to have to score to pay that back. Marital scored just the eight goals in Ligue 1 last season so it seems a big gamble to make him the third most expensive signing that United have ever made.
But after the Red Devils lost at Swansea on the weekend, boss Louis Van Gaal will have been just that more tempted to take the risk.
Betting Offers – Marital is a 66/1 shot to win this season’s Premier League Boot and online betting site Ladbrokes have set his goal line at 8.5 for the season where you can go for a price of 5/6 on over/under.
Following their defeat against Swansea, United are 2/5 to finish the season with no trophies, 7/4 to earn any of the major trophies, while Ladbrokes have gone 9/2 that Martial leaves before the start of the 2016/17 season.
