There should be no stopping Jessica Ennis-Hill now in the Sports Personality of the Year 2015 betting.
Cyclist Chris Froome was probably sitting confidently content at the head of the market, but then Ennis produced the mother of all comebacks and crushed the field at the World Championships to win gold in the Heptathlon.
Not bad for the new mother who only gave birth 13 months ago and who only decided a month before the World Championships to actually compete.
That’s just a measure of how incredibly talented Ennis-Hill is. While Ennis-Hill flourished, her young protege Katarina Johnson-Thompson created a brilliant first day to put herself in contention for a medal, but then bombed on the second day failing to record a long jump effort.
But a British 1-2 in the Olympic 2016 Heptathlon is a real possibility between the two of them. Ennis-Hill’s win saw her shoot to 2/1 favourite in the 2015 SPOTY award betting, with Froome pushed back to 4/1 second favourite.
Froome didn’t even get in the top three when he won the 2013 Tour de France and there really isn’t enough left in the sporting calendar for someone to usurp Ennis-Hill who finished second in Spoty 2012 and third in 2010 and 2009. Select other odds are Lewis Hamilton at 5/1, Andy Murray at 10/1, AP McCoy at 10/1 and Joe Root at 14/1.
