With both sides losing their opening games, the second round game between England and Uruguay means it’s do or die for either of them.
Uruguay suffered a shock loss to Costa Rica, who were apparently in Group D just to fill the numbers. England lost their opening Group D clash against Italy but even though the result didn’t go their way they would not be unhappy with their performance.
A notable absence from Uruguay’s squad in the first game was Liverpool striker Luis Suarez. He was on the bench and even with his side’s back to the walls display, he still didn’t come on as a substitute, which can only mean he was not fit enough to play in the game.
It must be said Uruguay’s attack looked disjointed and they desperately need Luis Suarez back and 100% fit for the England game. The one goal that came for Uruguay in their 3-1 defeat came from the penalty spot.
England weren’t very sharp in front of goal in their first game either. Rooney’s cross to set up Sturridge for the equaliser was the quality you would expect from a player the caliber of Rooney, but he failed to hit the target and take full advantage of a key opportunity late on to get something out of the game.
With that being said, it was a new look squad, and there was a lot of positives they could take from the Azzurri game, especially in terms of their attack. Sterling’s pace really took the game to Italy, and he will be hoping to repeat the performance against a Uruguay squad that will be a defender short in the absence of Maxi Pereira who was sent off for a reckless challenge late in the Costa Rica game.
Both Rooney and Gerrard will be key in this game and England will need to be solid at the back. They will no doubt be looking to take it to Uruguay. Scoring goals shouldn’t be a problem, but they will need to keep Suarez quiet. Suarez’s return will help Uruguay’s chances but England should win this game. Coral is offering 5/4 for an England win.
