It’s the final warm up match ahead of the 2015 Rugby World Cup for host nation England. With a win and a loss against France so far in their build up, England entertain Ireland at Twickenham on Saturday afternoon which should be a great primer and give us a fascinating peek about World Cup potential.
This is the time for final tweaks ahead of the tournament and England, despite their loss in Paris, are running as 4/11 favourites to take the victory at Twickenham.
England have won four of the last five meetings with Ireland, although they did lose out in Dublin during the 2015 RBS Six Nations, going down 19-9. Overall England lead the head to head against the Irish 74-47 from 129 previous meetings and the average points difference in meetings is 3.7 per game in England’s favour.
Ireland looked good after opening their warm up sequence with a win in Cardiff over Wales, but then suffered a surprising 10-16 home loss back on home soil against the Welsh.
That was a pretty big marker laid down by Wales and you wonder how much it will knock Ireland’s confidence, because they had lost just one of their last nine prior to that (that other defeat was against Wales too incidentally).
So who will respond best to their World Cup warm up defeats from last weekend? Ireland generally do the basics well, while England look to have more attacking adventure in their ranks. Ireland have lost three of their last four visits to Twickenham and there is an England -6 Handicap at William Hill to be considered.
