Today will see Argentina and Switzerland take to the field in their last of 16 match at the World Cup.
Switzerland were runners-up in Group E and Argentina finished top of their group. The Swiss will go into the sudden-death game with some confidence, having beat Honduras 3-0 in their last group game with Xherdan Shaqiri bagging a hat-trick. Shaqiri would definitely be Switzerland’s most influential player and they will need to see him repeat the performance.
Argentina finished with three wins in Group F, however, it probably suggests they are going better than what they really are. Much of Argentina’s success has come down to the brilliance of Messi. They will have to beat Switzerland without one of their star strikers, Sergio Aguero, who is set to miss the second round match with a thigh injury suffered in their 3-2 victory over Nigeria.
Switzerland doesn’t have a good record playing against South American teams. Against Argentina specifically, Switzerland has only managed 2 draws and 2 losses. Their toughest test in the group stage came against France where they were dominated for the majority of the contest before managing to score 2 consolation goals in their 2-5 defeat, but it was too little too late. Ottmar Hitzfeld’s sides defense was non-existent for large portions of the game and France really should have scored more goals.
Argentina were one of the odds on favorites to win the World Cup and it is hard to see how Switzerland will give them much trouble to see them progress to the Quarter Finals. Expect Argentina to win fairly convincingly even though both teams have looked vulnerable defensively at times. I think the wealth of talent Argentina have in attack will see them get the victory and there should be lots of goals. Coral offering 4/5 for more than 2.5 goals is a good bet.
