It is not surprising that both Argentina and Belgium have reached the quarter final stage of the 2014 World Cup.
Argentina were touted as one of the favorites to win the tournament given the enormous amount of talent in their squad along with the home ground advantage of being a South American team.
Likewise, Belgium have been considered by many punters to be the darkhorse of this World Cup. They’ve have a good run of form in the lead up to the competition and just seem to know how to win games.
This game really is a tough one to call. Both teams have gone into every game of this World Cup as favorites and whilst both sides topped their respective groups with 9 points after winning all of their group games, the wins haven’t been in impressive fashion.
Incredibly, both Argentina and Belgium’s last of 16 round games both required extra time to get the job done.
For the most part, it has been Messi’s brilliance that has got Argentina to this point in the tournament. He managed to score 4 goals in the group games and was the player who set up Di Maria for the deciding goal in the Switzerland game.
There are no recent head-to-head matches between Argentina and Belgium to judge how this game will take shape. The last time Argentina played Belgium was at the 1986 World Cup when they defeated Belgium 2-0. However, Belgium had beat them in the previous World Cup.
Although Belgium have a wealth of attacking talent, I don’t think it matches Argentina’s attack, which it has to be said is still yet to hit their stride. Argentina should be too good for Belgium. Coral is offering 5/4 for Argentina to score 2+ goals which is a good bet.
