It’s been somewhat of a rollercoaster ride for the game of online poker, ever since it’s conception in the year 1998. Despite the fact that poker has been around since the 1800’s, it didn’t reach major popularity until the year 1970 – when the very first World Series of Poker took place. This spike in followers and players paved the way for Online Poker to become very popular as well.
Planet Poker Marks the Beginning
Prior to online poker being available, there were roughly 15 websites that offered gambling services. This would quickly change, and in the year 1997, that number was increased to around 200. With technology steadily advancing, it was inevitable that someone would develop a website devoted to playing poker on the internet.
Mike Caro launched his website, Planet Poker, on January 1st, 1998 – this was the very first online poker website to ever be created. The standard rake rate (5%) and rake cap ($3) you’ll see today was actually established by Planet Poker.
Recent Online Poker Developments
Unfortunately, gambling with real money is no longer an available service at Planet Poker, ever since March 2007. Anti-gambling laws have made things difficult for online poker to survive, and a lot of other popular sites went down around the same time.
However, in August 2012, there was a major swing in the favor of casino sites, when it was ruled that poker did not violate federal law as it is a game of skill – not chance. The ruling was made by a New York federal judge, and more adjustments have been made to allow online poker to be readily available.
It’s likely that by the end of 2014, several more states will have lifted restrictions on online casinos. Currently the only state with an online poker site is Nevada; that particular site is called Ultimate Poker.
