There has been so much hype about the weekend’s Manchester derby that the Tyne and Wear derby has gotten overlooked a bit.
But there is a battle between two of the three bottom sides in the Premier League with Sunderland and Newcastle clashing at the Stadium of Light on Sunday.
It’s been a miserable season for the north east clubs as between them they have only managed the one win in the Barclays Premier League.
That went to Newcastle last weekend as they put six past Norwich. They had only scored six goals in their previous eight Premier League matches prior to that.
The four goals from Georgino Wijnaldum in the match was as many as Sunderland have scored in their last six top flight matches. So poor attacks from both this season and the bitter rivals have the joint second-worst defensive records this season too.
So the Tyne and Wear derby should be full of blood and thunder more than finesse and the Black Cats who have won the last five against the Magpies are 8/5 for the win with Newcastle at 9/5.
