The third round of the FA Cup is here this weekend, this of course being the stage where the top tier sides enter the contest and when the smaller clubs will be hoping for their shot at making some big headlines. Every underdog left in the competition at this stage dreams of picking off a club above them in the tiers of the English football when it comes to the FA Cup.
This is what the famous old trophy is made of, giant killing acts and the expectations of that moment of magic coming from an underdog. It brings the excitement of the underdog having their day and with only three all Premier League fixtures in the third round, there are some top tier sides who will be at risk of falling to a team from beneath them in the tiers.
The third round starts with an all-Premier League match up between West Ham and Man City on Friday night, but for the rest of the weekend, there are plenty of underdogs going off, looking to claim a big scalp, such as Reading making a trip to Old Trafford to take on Manchester United, while Bolton get a shot at home against Premier League strugglers Crystal Palace. Middlesbrough will have to try and deal with the visit of Championship side Sheffield Wednesday.
Preston will be hoping that home support gets them going for the visit of Arsenal while there are tough trips ahead for Plymouth and Peterborough on Sunday as they go to Liverpool and Chelsea respectively. One of the most fascinating ties of the third round of the FA Cup comes on Sunday when Championship Aston Villa side go to White Hart Lane to visit Tottenham. Can Villa who have benefitted hugely from the arrival of Steve Bruce, pull off an underdog heroic story against the Lilywhites?
