It is England’s turn to get into World Cup 2018 qualifying action on Saturday when they kick off at wembley against Malta. This is a game of course which the Three Lions will be expected to win and they will be expected to win it with some comfort and ease as well against the minnows. England need something bright and happy to pull themselves out of another mess following the rapid departure of Sam Allardyce from the managerial job after taking charge for just the one game.
After England’s huge failure at Euro 2016 that was the last thing that the Three Lions needed, but they have to move on and build on their 1-0 away win that they posted against Slovakia in their opening World Cup qualification match. England have scored a total of eight goals in their three previous contests against Malta and they will be expected to at least get a good three on the board at Wembley against them this time around. England fans will probably be expecting more, but Malta actually have a decidedly resilient defence for being such a small nation.
Just once in their last eleven matches have they conceded more than three goals in a match. That was against Scotland in their opening qualification match for the 2018 World Cup when they lost 5-1 with just nine men on the pitch. So they will make England work for their points no doubt, but the visitors aren’t likely to get very close to actually winning the game. However, it would be a big return from them if they could stick the ball in the back of the net and silence the Wembley crowd for just a moment. They are on a bit of a scoring streak as well.
Malta have scored in each of their last three games, defeats against Scotland and Austria, plus a draw against Estonia. So they are in some hot form (from their lowly perspective) and may be confident of sneaking one at Wembley on Saturday. They scored in their last meeting with England, a 2-1 home loss in a 2000 friendly. If Malta happen to score then some special insurance on the England v Malta fixture will kick in at bookmaker Ladbrokes.
