Beat Germany. That’s all that Ireland have to do to guarantee themselves at least third place in Euro 2016 qualification Group D. That is easier said than done of course and the last time that the Irish hosted Germany they were hammered 6-1 during World Cup 2014 qualification.
Ireland go into the final round of matches in third place, four points ahead of Scotland. So a win guarantees them a top three finish but there is still the jostling of positions with leaders Germany and second place Poland. Ireland face a trip to Poland for their final qualification match.
A 94th minute equaliser from John O’Shea gave Ireland a 1-1 draw in Germany earlier in qualification but the Irish are winless in their last six against the World Champions so this is a tough ask of them, especially with them looking a bit toothless up front recent in games against Scotland and Georgia.
So can they pull a top performance out of the bag when they really need it? They have conceded just the six goals in their last eleven internationals but go as 6/1 underdogs for the win, against the 4/9 favouritism on Germany. The draw is a 10/3 poke.
