Pep Guardiola’s managerial mettle is on the line at the moment suffered back to back Premier League defeats with Manchester City. After that crushing 3-1 home defeat against Chelsea, the Citizens followed that up with a disastrous defensive display in a 4-2 loss at Leicester on the weekend. So where next for Guardiola, who for the first time in his successful managerial career has conceded three or more goals in back to back league matches?
This is the first time of course that he has lost back to back league games with City and only once before in his career has Guardiola lost three consecutive league games as a manager. That was with Bayern Munich last May when they took their foot off the pedal in the Bundesliga title race, which they won at a canter anyway. Next up for City this season is a game against Watford in midweek, a game which they desperately need to win.
With a D3 L1 record in their last four home games in the league, City have fallen seven points behind leaders Chelsea in the standings. So they have to start fighting back until something can be done about their extremely ropey defence, which will most likely happen in the January transfer window. City can’t go on with what they have as it is compromising their title challenge. CIty have only claimed two clean sheets all season.
However, they have form against watford in the Premier League, never having lost to the Hornets, and City won both of last season’s meetings. The clash at the Etihad between the two of them last season ended in a 2-0 win for City and they didn’t allow Watford a single shot on target in the entire game. City will desperately want the points in this one as they have to go on and face both Arsenal and Liverpool in December still.
The away form of Watford isn’t exactly there at the moment as the Hornets have lost their last two away games at Liverpool and West Brom and have shipped nine goals in total across those two games. So there looks to be a real opportunity for Manchester City to find their feet again on home soil, even though they are still without Sergio Aguero who is serving out the second game in a four match ban.
