So the tennis action in the first Grand Slam of the season is on. It’s all action go in Melbourne and Britain actually are going on strong fronts in both the men’s and the women’s draw. Sir Andy Murray of course is heading up the charge in the men’s draw as he looks to land his first ever title at Melbourne Park.
The title is expected to come down to either him or six-time Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic, so you can see where the supremacy is on that one. But over in the women’s draw, the in-form Johanna Konta is the great British hope there. She went to the semi final in Melbourne last season let’s not forget and she recently picked up a title on the WTA Tour as a warm up.
So she is rising in stock all the time and can hopefully at least emulate her run on the blue courts from last year. There have already been easy first round wins for the likes of Serena Williams, Djokovic and Rafael Nadal, while the big casualty of the early action from Down Under so far from both sides was fourth seed Simona Halep’s exit at the hands of the unseeded Shelby Rogers from the USA.
Britain’s Heather Watson pulled off a great win in taking out former US Open champion Sam Stosur in her first round matchup. So there has been some fantastic action so far from Melbourne and it is only going to heat up as we pile through the rounds as well. During the first week of action from the Australian Open 2017, bookmaker Betfred are offering the chance for their customers to pick up some free bets.
